Noteable New South Wales Series by Lexa Hrpell. Some of my favourite places and images in New South Wales, Australia. Historic Hill End is a gorgeous former gold mining town in New South Wales Australia. The big rush for gold in the area began in the 1850's. One of the biggest finds was the Holtermann Rock in 1872, weighing 630lbs which was 75% gold! The town grew dramatically with locals and immigrants from afar to a population of over 8,000 people. Boasting 28 pubs, five banks, eight churches all in a small contained area as the mining lease boundaries began on its outskirts preventing it from spreading widely. The towns population declined as the gold ran out over the years. Today this historic town boasts only one surviving pub and a population of around 150 residents. Under the care of the National Parks and Wildlife Service it is classified as historic with many remnants intact to wander the town and dream of a bygone era. Due to the old buildings, remnants and picturesque lookouts over misty valleys, it has become an artists colony and retreat.
