Cradle Mountain is located in the central highlands of Tasmania, Australia. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site - 'Tasmanian Wilderness' in 1982 Ref no - 181quinquies In a region that has been subjected to severe glaciation, these parks and reserves, with their steep gorges, covering an area of over 1 million ha, constitute one of the last expanses of temperate rainforest in the world. Remains found in limestone caves attest to the human occupation of the area for more than 20,000 years. Named by Joseph Fossey in 1826, as it looked like a gold mining cradle. Towering to 1,459 metres. This national park consists of several mountains and lakes, including Dove Lake and Crater Lake. People come from around the world to explore and walk/hike the multiple tracks. From one hour to several days hike to Lake St Clair. An 8 hour return journey to the summit - rock climbing towards the end! Not for the faint hearted, yet the views from the summit are spectacular! Being a mountain range, the weather can change rapidly, without notice, so come prepared for all conditions.
