Description
Sunrise on Kalaya, Kanku Breakaways - South Australia by Lexa Harpell.
Kalaya (Emu) is a rock formation in Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park in South Australia. The place has some of the most fascinating landscape and rock formations I've seen.....to date.
From multi colours sandstone mesa rock formations to spongy moon plains to landscapes that glisten in the sun from selenite scattered across the landscape of brownish moss green.
This lunar type landscape was formed when the water evaporated from a large inland sea, exposing the seafloor and mesa topped sandstone and ironstone 'islands'.
This morning sun highlights the rich vibrant sandstone on the mesas. The multi colours comes from the ironstone capped mesas, leaching of iron which rusts the softer sandstone below.
Kanku Breakaways is about 35 kms from the quirky mining town of Coober Pedy in Outback South Australia.
*An utterly fascinating place where movies such as Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert have been filmed.
