Description
Angkata - Kanku Breakaways - South Australia
The rock formation known as 'Angkata' from the first people of Australia.
Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park in South Australia has some of the most fascinating landscape and rock formations I've seen.....to date.
From multi colours sandstone mesa rock formations to spongy moon plains to landscapes that glisten in the sun from selenite scattered across the landscape of brownish moss green.
This lunar type landscape was formed when the water evaporated from a large inland sea, exposing the seafloor and mesa topped sandstone and ironstone 'islands'.
The late afternoon sun intensifies the rich vibrant sandstone on the mesas. The multi colours comes from the ironstone capped mesas, leaching of iron which rusts the softer sandstone below.
Kanku Breakaways is about 35 kms from the quirky mining town of Coober Pedy in Outback South Australia.
*An utterly fascinating place where movies such as Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert have been filmed.
