Bay of Fires Rockscape by Lexa Harpell
Sunrise ar Cozy Corner beach at the Bay of Fires.
Orange lichen covers the rocks at the Bay of Fires in Tasmania's east coast. Water and wind erodes the lichen in places forming fabulous contrasts.
White rock is left bare as the waves wash the bright orange lichen away, leaving a stunning display.
This lichen grows in many places in Tasmania, although Bay of Fires has the most condensed and largest amount in one place.
As early European discoverers sailed into the bay, they thought the bay was on fire upon seeing the coastline rocks covered in this bright orange lichen.
So they named this area 'Bay of Fires.'

Very cool coloration!
Lexa Harpell replied:
Thanks Chad - that is the colour of the rocks from the orange lichen which grows on them.
