Description
The old timber stairs leading to Tathra Wharf on the south coast of New South Wales is the only remaining coastal steamer wharf.
Built in 1861-2 using Terpentine supports into solid rock - adding on to the smaller jetty from the early 1800's.
This wharf was quite active in its day and a necessary passenger link to Sydney - transporting milk and stock from the rich Bega Valley.
Doomed for demolition in the early 1973, locals rallied with lobbying and fundraising to keep this historic wharf for 10 years. Finally successful!!
I have a personal attachment to this wharf - my mother visited it often and travelled to Sydney with her mother and siblings on board the Merimbula at the age of 8years old after her father passed away.
