This historic canal based city of Bruges or Brugge is the capital of West Flanders in the Flemish region of Belgium. A small city of only 14,000 hectares and the city centre is a World Heritage Site of UNESCO since 2000.

Drenched in Medieval Architecture the buildings are intact and well preserved.
Today we see Brugge as a mini Venice - a romantic city full of canals, chocolates and waffles!
A city full of colour and sweet delights, gorgeous canal walks, horse rides, swans and parks. Worth the time to explore this amazing historic city.

Yet, that was not how it all began. Brugge dates back to the Bronze and Iron Ages as a coastal settlement and the first fortifications were built during the First Century BC to protect the coastline from pirates.
During the 12th-15th centuries it became an important trade and commerce route due to its tidal inlet. Exchanging goods and spices from afar including wool and cloth markets. Brugge weavers and spinners were regarded to be the best in the world.
During the 17th century the famous Dutch lace industry became prominent yet was not strong enough to hold Brugge as the main trading capital. Antwerp became the major trading centre and Brugge's population declined and by 1900 only 50,000 residents remained.
