Description
Kanyaka Station Ruins by Lexa Harpell.
Once a thriving sheep and cattle station established in 1852 by 24 year old Hugh Proby. Kanyaka Station endured the harsh weather patterns of the area. Predominantly an arid, dry area mixed with flash flooding of nearby creeks where Hugh sadly drowned while attempting to cross the flooded river driving a mob of cattle during a thunderstorm.
New owners grew the station where 70 families lived and worked adding to the number of buildings on the station. Due to its isolation, it needed to be self-sufficient, growing fruit and vegetables for all who worked on the station.
Ultimately, the dry conditions and severe droughts took its toll on the stock and Kanyaka Station was eventually abandoned leaving the remnants of stonework we can still see today.
Kanyaka comes from an Aboriginal word thought to mean Place of Stone which is in the Flinders Ranges area. The traditional owners of the area are the Barnggarla people.
