Description
Lichen Rocks - Fishers Point -Tasmania by Lexa Harpell.
Bright orange and yellow lichen grows on the rocks on the east coast of Tasmania.
Cockle Creek in Tasmania is home to the most southern road in Australia with many spectacular sights that a short hike can take you to.
One short hike takes you along the beaches and bush around Recherche Bay to remote Fishers Point. A 7am start is a must to catch the morning sun lighting the beaches and rocks.
Beautiful Recherche Bay is a well known safe haven mooring for those who sail the great Southern Ocean. Returning from Fishers Point, almost on cue, two yachts were slowly motoring into the bay.
I have to admit, I stood watching them slowly motor along and wondered of their adventures.
Where had they come from, what had they seen on their journey?
Were they Australians sailing around Tasmania or were they, adventurers, from another country exploring this glorious globe.
Pangs of envy kicked in for a somewhat romantic life on the ocean - then I remembered I have chronic seasickness. But to dream.....
Other hikes take you to land's end at the bottom of Australia where you can look out at the ocean knowing the next stop is Antarctica.
Another spectacular hike is the 3 day, 85km hike to Melaluca following the south east cape coastline, so remote, that you need to take a light plane out of the area.
