Description
Old Wilpena Station - Building by Lexa Harpell.
One of the original buildings from Old Wilpena Station which nestles in the Flinders Ranges. One of the most scenic areas in South Australia.
Wilpena Pound was 'discovered' by our early settlers in 1850.
A young 25 year old established Wilpena Station close to the nearby creek which drains from the nearby Wilpena Pound. Water was scarce and always sought after on this arid continent. The amount of the water supply determined the size of the stock a station could carry - and that would produce wealth.
However, in Australia, the weather patterns are not predictable and any endeavour would be a gamble.
Even though the station continued for 135 years, it had many setbacks, including the great drought in the 1860's. The station by then was around 2,000 square kms and held 33,000 sheep and 4,000 head of cattle. The drought reduced stock to a mere 1,000 sheep and no cattle - the land had no 'green' in sight.
