Description
Papa Katjura - Kanku Breakaways - South Australia by Lexa Harpell
There are a few names for this rock formation in the Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park in South Australia.
Indigenous name is Papa Katjura - Two Dogs. One white, one brown.
Europeans call it Salt and Pepper or The Castles.
Interestingly, this is one rock formation (rather than the appearance of two) that has weathered at different rates.
The area was once a large inland sea with small islands of sandstone in multi colours of white, yellow, orange and red. With the evaporation of the water, it is now it is an arid, lunar looking landscape giving you the appearance you have landed on Mars!
The Breakaways is a striking rocky landscape of flat-topped mesas - low hills appear from a distance as if "broken away" from the higher ground of the escarpment.
*An utterly fascinating place where movies such as Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert have been filmed.
