Description
Traditionally peat was used in Ireland for heating and cooking. this was the major heating source as timber and coals were in small quantities.
Not quite as hot as burning wood and can 'smoke' if not fully dry.
Peat is usually harvested in the summer periods and stacked to dry in the sun before storing in the home. It is called 'Turf Cutting' and still widely harvested in rural Ireland.
Peat bogs grow at an extremely slow rate of 1mm per year - and caused by flooding waters obstructing the flow of oxygen into the decaying vegetation and soils.
