Description
Retired Bottles Collection Series by Lexa Harpell.
A lifetime's work of two avid bottle collectors in country New South Wales.
Their collection runs to over 5,000 bottles of many shapes and sizes. Some dating back to the year 1800! Some came from Europe to Australia and others made in Australia.
Beautiful thick handmade bottles with separately moulded necks and rounded bases. The collection also includes medicine, chemical perfume, beer, alcohol, ink wells, cordial glass bottles.
GLASS HISTORY: 'Originated' from nature's volcanoes, producing Obsidian, a translucent black glass like substance. Dating back to around 75,000 BC it was used by 'early man' to make weapons and tools - knives, arrows, razors, spearheads etc.,
AUSTRALIAN HISOTRY for Glass Making.
Around 1813 one man began making glass blown bottles in Australia. Not until 1866 there was a need for locally made glass bottles for chemicals and medicines. Two chemists built a furnace in Melbourne to produce glass bottles. Another gentleman also built a furnace in Sydney around the same time - this later became the site for the large AGM - Australian Glass Manufacturers plant.
