Maghera's magical rock formations at low tide.
It's hard to impress an Australian as far as beaches are concerned. We have over 11,000 scattered along our vast coastlines. So when someone in Ireland told me they would take me to a beach that would take my breath away - obviously I was a little skeptical!
Yet Maghera Beach in County Donegal did just that! Quite a different vista than the tropical beaches everyone loves.
I fell in love with the raw, wildness of Maghera the looming low lying clouds it exudes PEACE!
This particular rock formation appears to have broken off from the cliffs and hurled onto the beach at some time long ago.
The black band of rock in the middle - from what I've heard - is a horizontal funnel of molten bassalt.
It is a vast tidal beach with approaching gentle sand dunes, cascading waterfalls and 13 sea caves created from the land splitting at some point in time.
The fascination of what forces must have taken place to produce these rock formations. A band of black molten basalt lays between the layers of schist rock. This hard rock is almost unweathered to the elements over time seemingly prehistoric in appearance.
This is why Ireland is so magical!
