Description
Rocky Landscape - Flinders Ranges by Lexa Harpell.
A vibrant rocky landscape in the Flinders Ranges is home for the cluster of Grasstrees and a few smallish species of Kangaroos. Exposed to the harsh Australian elements, dry summers, drought, bushfires - they have adapted over time.
Grasstree, or Xanthorrhoea australis is a genus of about 30 species of flowering plants endemic to Australia. They are extremely slow growing, taking 20 years for the base-stem to appear.
Some are reported to be 600-700 years old being a few meters tall.
A fan of long spikey green leaves adorn the top - at times a long spear-like spike grows with tiny white flowers.
They are highly resilient plants to bushfires, often you will find the trunks scorched black - yet the plants somehow survive.
