Description
Selinite Landscape - Kanku Breakaways - South Australia by Lexa Harpell.
Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park in South Australia has some of the most fascinating landscape and rock formations I've seen.....to date.
From multi colours sandstone mesa rock formations to spongy moon plains to landscapes that glisten in the sun from selinite scattering the landscape of brownish green.
This lunar type landscape was formed when the water evaporated from a large inland sea, exposing the seafloor and mesa topped sandstone and ironstone 'islands'.
This rather small slighty hilly area in comparison has the same spongy surface as Moon Plains, yet in a dark brownish green surface.
Driving up a very small hill in the morning sun, I noticed the landscape was shining with what I first thought was broken glass from drink bottles. Ok I admit, I immediately stood on my soapbox and angrily thought of the carelessness of humans disregarding our country's land. Then I saw it was small sheets of a mineral of some sort randomly scattered across the landscape.
Later, I found out it was sheets of selenite, similar to mica.
Kanku Breakaways is about 35 kms from the quirky mining town of Coober Pedy in outback South Australia.
*An utterly fascinating place where movies such as Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert have been filmed.
