Description
Unfenced Stations Warning Signs - Outback Australia by Lexa Harpell.
All kinds of unusual things happen in Outback Australia.
Driving along the highway heading north in South Australia, you come across a number of signs like this one every 50-100 kms or so. (I actually didn't count, just a guess. Although I did notice the name of the stations changed.)
The sheep and cattle stations in Outback Australia are generally not totally fenced as they are quite large. So sometimes you may find stock wanding along or near the highway.
One thing I very rarely do is drive at night, early in the morning or late afternoon for this and other reasons. Daytime you can generally see an animal on the long stretches of roads to avoid a very costly accident.
Another reason are kangaroos, who usually rest in the heat of the day and move in the cooler parts of the day. They are not so easy to see as they move fairly quickly and have little road sense. Cows and sheep are far slower so you have more time to spot and avoid them in the daylight.
I've seen some pretty ugly accidents with vehicles totally written off, yes even from hitting a kangaroo! It is a very long way to have your vehicle towed to the umm nearest town. Very costly in many ways.
So it is a good idea to head these warning signs in the outback of Australia.
