Description
Welcome to Coober Pedy 2 - South Australia
A tree of hard hats and a row of tires at the turn-off to William Creek from Coober Pedy tells you what this area is all about.
Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world and is nothing less than fascinating filled with many characters.
The name comes from aboriginal words meaning 'white man in a hole'!
A desert mining town of opals, with a sun baked lunar-like landscape with hundreds of earth mounds dot the surrounding flat landscape.
A rich opal mining history and a quirky lifestyle where most residents live underground - a way to escape the intense summer heat.
It can be 120 degrees in the open, yet a cool consistent 70 degrees underground.
Around 1,500 people live underground in approx 1,000 underground dwellings.
Even many accommodations and businesses are underground - to experience is a must!
Coober Pedy is situated about 850 kms north of Adelaide in South Australia and experiences a semi-arid desert climate. Hot as hades in summer and warm in winter with some chilly desert nights.
Coober Pedy produces and reticulates its own water from a bore 25 kms away.
