Wheels of Progress Series by Lexa Harpell.
A look of early Australian agricultural farm equipment that 'grew' a nation.
From humble beginnings, the colonisation of Australia began with the arrival of 'The First Fleet' of convicts to Sydney in 1788. The livestock in the colony consisted of seven horses, seven cattle, 29 sheep, 74 pigs, five rabbits, 18 turkeys, 29 geese, 35 ducks, and 209 fowls.
Exploration missions to find agricultural land began, and within two years our first wheat farm was established by ex convict James Ruse.
In 1813, Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth crossed the Great Diving Range and within six months a road was built, opening up the vast expanse land within New South Wales. Farming and grazing established very quickly with grants and 'squatters' alike.
Of course early farming was done 'by hand' with horses and bullocks.
During the mid 1800's, inventions for farm machinery suitable for our arid land began to grow.
