Description
Window in a Dugout Home Cave by Lexa Harpell.
People ask many questions about living 'underground' in Coober Pedy, Outback Australia.
Two are 'where do you get light' ? 'what about ventilation' ? etc
This is an inside view from inside a dugout home of a 'window' to the outside.
As you can see, the rock walls are very thick allowing that wonderful protection from the outside summer heat. It looks very solid too!
Some have long shaft skylights - others only use electric light.
As for ventilation, they usually have several air shafts with whirlybirds to circulate fresh air into the homes.
Interestingly, these homes don't smell musty from stale air or dampness - well it hardly rains here, so dampness wouldn't be a problem.
Although they do need to have their water waste rooms at ground level to disperse the water outside.
Grafitti signatures adorn the inside walls of the home.
