Description
Winter Afterglow - Kanku -The Breakawayss South Australia by Lexa Harpell.
Most people depart after watching the sunset - where the ball of the sun vanishes over the horizon. I like to sit around for the afterglow when the sky and landscape lights up with one last pop of light and colour at twilight.
Sometimes it is quite dramatic, other times not so much, yet worth waiting for the surprise, the expectation. You usually find youself alone or just a few other people squeezing in every magical moment.
I've visited Kanku several nights and mornings and each time is very different.
The Breakaways are a series of multi coloured flat-topped mesas in the semi arid desert in the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park about 35kms north of the opal mining town of Coober Pedy in South Australia.
Although not overly large rock formations, their striking appeal are their patchwork of multi colours of sandstone and rising out of a large flat surrounding landscape.
The area was once a massive inland sea with fossils to explore, now home to native flora and fauna surviving in the desert area.
Sunset from the high ground is the most popular for visitors - although I found sunrise the most fascinating lighting up the many varied formations whilst driving on the flat grounds.
