Description
Ireland Rocks Series by Lexa Harpell.
Approaching Sligo from the north - the commanding and majestic Benbulbin rock formation which leads to Sligo Bay. Benbulbin is part of the Dartry Mountains in Country Sligo on the west coast of Ireland.
Created over 320 million years ago during the Ice Age, it is mainly made up of a hard limestone in the upper region to a thinner transitional limestone and at the base is mainly mudstone.
Benbullbin is a well known walking destination with views over the bay. Mostly approached from the gentler sloping southern end, the steep northern side is very dangerous due to the extreme weather conditions from the Atlantic Ocean.
A study was done to determine just how many shades of green there are in the Emerald Isle of Ireland. they came across the number of 53 shades and hues of the colour green.
Johnny Cash wrote a song forty Shades of Green during his visit to Ireland in 1959.
