Bull Kelp on Blue Rocks by Lexa Harpell.
Bull Kelp Strands by Lexa Harpell. Bull kelp grows in the unpolluted, pristine waters around Tasmania, Australia. During storms or rough seas, the kelp breaks off from their beds and wash up on the shores. This kelp is quite thick and leathery to the touch. Once they are out of water they begin to dry and become brittle and turn black. Growing up to 8 metres in length these strands grow rapidly in the right conditions up to 10-14 cms a day and can live up to 14 years in the ocean. The kelp is extremely high in nutrients and has many medicinal benefits and is harvested in many areas. I'd also learned from one local artist that you can cut the kelp in circles, crimp the edges and let it dry over a bowl to make a bowl for the home to pop nick-knacks in! Of course, I had to try it and found it to be very durable, although I didn't have time to be totally creative with my patterns - but yes, it works! .
