Nearby plant seeds blow onto the lake, landing on the shallow water, when the water dries, salt crystals form on the tips and anchor them on the floor of the lake.
They ed up looking like golden stars across the lake.
After a long drive, I pulled up to Lake Bumbunga in South Australia just as the sun was setting on an overcast day. The lake was dry at this time of year, yet the soft bubble gum pink was still visable. I stayed for the next day's surise to my delight. During the wet period, the lake is a much brighter pink due to the
Bumbunga (local indigenous) term for "rain water lake" derives from the word Parnpangka.
Located on the outskirts of the town of Lochiel which is situated in a farming region in South Australia.
The lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year and the pink colour comes from a salt-loving algae.
