Description
Creative Gardening 2 - Coober Pedy by Lexa Harpell.
To say Coober Pedy is fascinating would be an understatement.
The town was born out of opportunity, the opportunity to strike it rich or make a living mining opal when a young boy found the first opals back in 1915 as his family was gold prospecting in the area.
Situated in remote Outback Australia in a desert region and the driest town in Australia.
Where the heat rises over 50 deg C in the summer and the winter nights can drop to a desert cold 2 deg C.
The first people who arrived were adventurous and hardy, tough people living on their wits, adapting to the harsh conditions. Having to truck in water to survive or wait for camel trains in hope when water ran out.
Adaption and a strong sense of humour was a necessity. Many began digging into the rock hills to create a dug-out - a home to escape the heat.
It has become a bit of a tourist attraction to stay in one of the several underground hotels or shop underground.
'Down Under' has a whole new meaning in Coober Pedy!
No grass grows here, so people's 'gardens' have become creative using old vehicles, pieces of scrap metals, or anything that has broken down to create 'art' for their yard.
