Description
Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin. Preserved NOT sanitised!
Heavy, thick locks ensured no one would escape.
Doors of the World Series by Lexa Harpell.
What I love about this gaol is that they have preserved as much of the original structures without 'polishing it up' and becoming sanitsed. You still 'feel' the essence of this prision and its occupants.
Dublin's Kilmanham Gaol has a long, brutal, horrid history.
Member of the Easter Uprising were imprisoned and executed here.
Public hangings were common at the front of the prison. Housing men, women and children - at times in the same cell which could hold up to five people. Not a pretty time.
Thousands of prisoners from this gaol alone were sent to Australia as 'free' labour to colonise the country.
