Description
A Rare Survival - Vicars Close, Wells, Somerset, England.
The early bird captures the scene without people! Waking way before the sun rose, I walked to Vicars Close to capture this iconic street still in semi-darkness illuminated by the street lights and a hint of moring sky light.
Vicars' Close is claimed to be the oldest residential street still intact in all of Europe.
Originally built for Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury in the 14th century to accommodate chantry priests. The 27 remaining residences of medieval structure (from the original 42, one for each vicar) connect to Wells Cathedral at the end of the close by a stone arched pedestrian gate.
The residents today include all twelve men of the Vicars Choral, plus the organists and virgers.
Since the 1000's the Vicars Choral has been the heart of Wells in Somerset with a world class choir.
I also managed to sit in Wells Cathedral to listen and watch this world class choir rehearse - a very timely visit in all aspects.
The purity of angelic voices floated through the cathedral - the likes I have never heard.
