Rocks of Maghera Beach Ireland #1
Maghera's magical rock formations. Maghera's magical rock formations - a large tidal beach, this rock broke off the nearby cliffs long ago and somehow ended up in the middle of the beach, resting on the sand.
At low tide, you can wander the beach caves and see the brilliant colours of seaweeds that attach to the rocks in the high tide mark.
It's hard to impress an Australian as far as beaches are concerned. We have over 11,000 scattered along our vast coastlines. So when someone in Ireland told me they would take me to a beach that would take my breath away - obviously I was a little skeptical!
Yet Maghera Beach in County Donegal did just that! Quite a different vista than the tropical beaches everyone loves.
I fell in love with the raw, wildness of Maghera the looming low lying clouds it exudes PEACE!
It is a vast tidal beach with gentle sand dunes, cascading waterfalls and 13 sea caves created from the land splitting at some point in time.
The fascination of what forces must have taken place to produce these rock formations. A band of black molten basalt lays between the layers of schist rock. This hard rock is almost unweathered to the elements over time seemingly prehistoric in appearance.
This is why Ireland is so magical!
